Women’s rugby to open season Saturday

The women’s rugby club team plays Saturday in Kaysville in their first two regular season games.

Last week was supposed to be their first game, but it was cancelled because of bad field conditions.

The first game, which will begin at noon, is against Weber State. In the past the Aggies haven’t had much trouble beating Weber.

“We’ve never lost to Weber before,” injured player Patty Kohler said. “I’d be surprised if we didn’t win that game.”

Players expect more of a challenge in the second game against the Salt Lake City club team. It will be a makeup game from last week when field conditions were poor.

“I don’t know how they [Salt Lake] are this year, but normally it is a pretty evenly matched game,” Kohler said.

“If there’s a field it will be great,” Jaima Gill said.

“We have a big task ahead of us Saturday,” coach Dave Dyer said. “I really hope the team does well. I’m not really worried about individual performances.”

The Aggies’ confidence level is high right now after a strong week of practice indoors.

“I’m very confident,” Dyer said. “We had a strong practice this week with a good turnout.”

As always, the team is still looking for new recruits.

“I don’t care if you have ever even seen a rugby ball,” Gill said. “New players are always great to have.”
