Women’s rugby trounce Wolverines

Kevin Austin

Shutting out the UVSC Wolverines 46-0 Saturday the Utah State Aggie women’s rugby team qualified to go to the national tournament later this year.

“It was a good game, really messy,” head coach Patti Kohler said. “But we won. We won by a lot.”

USU lead 24-0 at the break dominating in every aspect of the game but not playing up to the standards that Kohler expected.

“We have a lot to work on ourselves,” Kohler said. “They played fine. I expected more of them, but they played fine, you know we won the game.”

Kohler said Brooke Lambert, Utah State’s field captain, played exceptional converting on a try and also converting three kicks throughout the day with winds of up to 25 mph.

“I wasn’t kicking very well today,” Lambert said. “The wind was definitely a factor.”

Whitney Doe for Utah State played in her first game ever and scored her first score ever.

Other players to score were Bryn Mcmillan, Lissa Woolf, Sara Gilmore, Tara Earl and Alicia Joseph.

“It was a fun game, it’s always fun when we’re winning,” Lambert said.

Since it was a union game, USU and UVSC actually played a third unofficial half to get some inexperienced players some time in real game situations and gain experience before going to nationals.
