Women’s soccer team sputters in Wash.
Fire off enough shots and chances are at least one of them will go in.
The USU soccer team didn’t get enough shots off; Gonzaga did. Consequently, the Bulldogs downed the Aggies 2-1, Friday, Sept. 21 in Spokane, Wash., bringing USU to 3-5 on the season.
The shooting mismatch was evident as Gonzaga fired off 16 shots compared to USU’s seven. The Ags had a difficult time penetrating the Bulldog defense, only taking one shot on goal. Meanwhile Gonzaga had eight on goal, with two finding the back of the net, leaving USU goalkeeper Ali Griffin six four on the day.
Gonzaga came out in full force, firing off three shots in just 10 minutes but failed to convert. It wasn’t until three minutes before the half that the Bulldogs got on the board.
Keeping her hot scoring streak alive, freshman mifielder Ashley Riley netted the ball off a header from 15 yards out.
The Bulldogs scored again in the 75th minute of action when Jamie Blanche fought off three Aggie defenders and landed the ball in the back of the net, taking Gonzaga up 2-0.
It wasn’t until the last five minutes of the game that the Aggies got a goal. Fed by an Alysa Adams assist, senior forward Dana Peart kicked the ball to the right corner of the net, to score the Aggies’ lone goal.
Peart now has 11 points on the season off five goals and one assist.
The Aggies next travel to Cheney, Wash. to take on Eastern Washington, a team USU beat 1-0 at home last season.
