Women’s tennis opens season

The Utah State Women’s Tennis Team opened their season Thursday in the BYU Invitational. Two Aggie singles and one doubles tandem remain after the first day of competition.

Sophomore McKenzie Davis continued to lead the way for the Aggies, defeating Jessica Parizher of Wyoming 6-2, 6-0 in the second round after a first round bye.

Freshman Amber Stuhlmann also advanced to second-day play with a first-round bye and a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Megan Rindlisbacher from Weber State.

Davis partnered with senior Jaci West to defeat Titi Espinosa and Christa Gecheva of Wyoming 8-5 in doubles and are the only Aggie duo remaining.

In singles, senior Julie Tukuafu fell to Veronica Popovici of Wyoming (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) in the second round after she had defeated Weber State’s Nittava Phonharath (6-1, 6-3) in the first round.

Senior Kristina Voytsekhovich defeated Manuela Piezuch of Boise State in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) in the first round before BYU’s Meghan Sheehan-Dizon (6-2, 6-1) defeated her in the second round.

Senior Jaci West withdrew from singles action before her first round match.

The Aggies will continue main draw and consolation play throughout Friday and Saturday.
