{"id":108387,"date":"2014-03-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usustatesman.com\/?p=108387"},"modified":"2014-03-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-05T00:00:00","slug":"paying-it-forward-the-center-for-women-and-gender-awards-honor-cache-valley-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usustatesman.com\/paying-it-forward-the-center-for-women-and-gender-awards-honor-cache-valley-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Paying it forward, the Center for Women and Gender Awards honor Cache Valley women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"imported-author\">Katie Larsen, staff writer<\/p>\n<p>\tAmid the music of the Blue String Quartet, the nominees for the Center for Women and Gender Awards received recognition for their achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe Center for Women and Gender hosted the fifth annual <span data-scayt_word=\"CWG\" data-scaytid=\"1\">CWG<\/span> Awards in the <span data-scayt_word=\"TSC\" data-scaytid=\"3\">TSC<\/span> Ballroom Tuesday evening. Nominees were selected more than six months in advance, said Melissa Keller Adamson, senior staff assistant for the <span data-scayt_word=\"CWG\" data-scaytid=\"2\">CWG<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\t“It’s not just about the achievement itself, but how they have helped other women with their careers and how they have paid it forward,” Adamson said.<\/p>\n<p>\tCecelia <span data-scayt_word=\"Foxley\" data-scaytid=\"5\">Foxley<\/span> and Gina <span data-scayt_word=\"Wickwar\" data-scaytid=\"6\">Wickwar<\/span> were both nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award, a first in <span data-scayt_word=\"CWG\" data-scaytid=\"4\">CWG<\/span> Award history.<\/p>\n<p>\t“It’s very difficult to compare the accomplishments of women across a region,” said Anne Austin, director of the <span data-scayt_word=\"CWG\" data-scaytid=\"8\">CWG<\/span>. “They came to me and said, ‘What do we do?’ and I said, ‘Give them both the award.'”<\/p>\n<p>\tRebecca Walton, an assistant professor of English at <span data-scayt_word=\"USU\" data-scaytid=\"10\">USU<\/span>, was nominated for the Early Career Award for her research in developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>\t“I look at how people design, access and use information often through technology,” Walton said. “What is most significant for me is where I see myself progressively becoming the researcher I want to be. Over time, I see myself embracing and embodying those values more and more. I’ve gotten to meet people I never would have encountered otherwise who are doing amazing work and I really admire them, and it’s really opened my mind to where knowledge and expertise reside. It’s really humbling.”<\/p>\n<p>\tGina <span data-scayt_word=\"Wickwar\" data-scaytid=\"11\">Wickwar<\/span> was the second nominee to speak at the ceremony. <span data-scayt_word=\"Wickwar\" data-scaytid=\"12\">Wickwar<\/span> was nominated for her work as an essayist with Utah Public Radio as an author of children’s books including “The Hidden Prince of Oz” and as a technical writer for the Space Dynamics Lab at <span data-scayt_word=\"USU\" data-scaytid=\"13\">USU<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\t“I was an English major and I took a lot of science and math, chemistry and physics and that helped me a lot to prepare me for the background that I have,” <span data-scayt_word=\"Wickwar\" data-scaytid=\"17\">Wickwar<\/span> said. “I urge all young women to do that. It makes you very hirable.”<\/p>\n<p>\t<span data-scayt_word=\"USU\" data-scaytid=\"19\">USU<\/span> alumna Cecelia <span data-scayt_word=\"Foxley\" data-scaytid=\"20\">Foxley<\/span> was the also the nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award for serving more than 10 years as a commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education and chief executive officer to the state Board of Regents. <span data-scayt_word=\"Foxley\" data-scaytid=\"21\">Foxley<\/span> the only woman to ever serve as commissioner for the Utah System Higher Education and also served the longest term.<\/p>\n<p>\t“The bottom line is I got my start here,” <span data-scayt_word=\"Foxley\" data-scaytid=\"25\">Foxley<\/span> said. “I was the fashion editor for The Statesman years ago.
