{"id":22102928,"date":"2019-04-17T18:35:25","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T00:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usustatesman.com\/?p=22102928"},"modified":"2019-04-17T18:38:33","modified_gmt":"2019-04-18T00:38:33","slug":"utah-public-radio-kicks-off-series-about-mental-health-and-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usustatesman.com\/utah-public-radio-kicks-off-series-about-mental-health-and-athletes\/","title":{"rendered":"Utah Public Radio kicks off series about mental health and athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Human in the Helmet, an event to follow up a two-part radio series with Utah Public Radio about mental health in athletics, will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Wayne Estes Center at Utah State University.<\/p>\n<p>Paige Zamora, the graduate student who organized the radio series during her internship at UPR, said the purpose of the event is to address the growing issue of mental health in athletics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting people to understand and see an athlete\u2019s face connected with this, I\u2019m hoping, will bridge a gap that\u2019s been, to me, way too wide for way too long,\u201d Zamora said. \u201cI think we are so OK with breaking down the stigma when it comes to \u2018normal\u2019 people, but when it is people who are supposed to be these super-human athletes or that we count on to do all these things we don\u2019t see them as human as we should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cori Smith, the director of Utah State\u2019s women\u2019s basketball operations, said addressing athletes\u2019 mental health is happening slowly but surely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, in my opinion, it should have happened yesterday, but anything that can help student athletes feel like they\u2019re not alone and that they have support is moving in a positive direction,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI don\u2019t know that there can ever be enough emphasis on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamora\u2019s series has also been supported by Intermountain Healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntermountain hasn\u2019t really put a lot of thought into athletes and their mental health in the last five years,\u201d said Kendra Morris, Intermountain\u2019s marketing and communications sponsorship specialist. \u201cWe\u2019ve been really thoughtful in the most recent years with mental health as a whole, but I think it has been a recent thing thinking about how athletes, specifically, suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morris said Intermountain is excited about the awareness being created for athletes and their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think that these successful athletes are confident and happy and that they\u2019ve got these amazing, great lives, but really they are people suffering from health issues just like anybody else,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n<p>Zamora\u2019s message is meant for three groups of people\u2014kids, parents and coaches, and the athletes themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf nothing else I feel like interviewing these athletes about it will help them feel that they are not alone,\u201d Zamora said. \u201cAnd I think that is the end goal other than helping parents and coaches understand how to deal with these things and how to spot them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamora, Utah State athletics, and Intermountain Healthcare all hope athletes will feel more inclined to seek help if they need it and realize they are not alone in their mental health struggles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can happen to anybody at any time and it really is an illness,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIt\u2019s like a broken leg. It\u2019s like a concussion.
