{"id":22124066,"date":"2023-04-05T08:00:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T14:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usustatesman.com\/?p=22124066"},"modified":"2023-03-30T18:23:45","modified_gmt":"2023-03-31T00:23:45","slug":"college-of-engineering-sails-forward-in-a-concrete-canoe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usustatesman.com\/college-of-engineering-sails-forward-in-a-concrete-canoe\/","title":{"rendered":"College of Engineering sails forward in a concrete canoe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Utah State University\u2019s College of Engineering has been working to draft, mold, cast, create and sail a canoe made of concrete for The American Society of Civil Engineers\u2019 annual competition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Brett Safely is a junior majoring in civil engineering. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThis is probably the biggest event of the year for us, outside of our actual conference,\u201d Safely said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good experience for any student. We\u2019re particularly proud of the fact that we\u2019re able to bring students from all across the program, so freshman to senior, and they\u2019ve made valuable contributions.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The students began working on the project back in August, and in April, they will take their canoe to Reno, Nevada, to compete.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In September, engineering students are given a packet of rules of around 70 pages, which outlines the proposal format, canoe dimensions and more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIn the concrete mix, we were given some pretty strict details on what\u2019s included,\u201d Safely said. \u201cAll concrete is made of two and a half main parts, a binder and an aggregate.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">According to Safely, Portland cement will be their basis material this year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cOf all your binders, only 30% can be normal cement,\u201d Safely said. \u201cSo we looked at what we had on hand here at the university, or locally available, and settled on using a balance of silica fume and fly ash, which is a byproduct from coal power plants.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Safely said this is a good option because it complies with the competition requirements, and it is significantly lighter than regular Portland cement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Rocks and gravel are usually used as aggregate. Since these materials are heavier, the students ended up going a different route.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIt\u2019s just recycled expanded glass,\u201d Safely said. \u201cThat\u2019s much, much lighter than any standard rock that we use, and that comes in various sizes for us to put into the mix.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">According to Safely, the boat cannot be taken out on the water in Logan due to environmental regulations, but the team can still practice paddling and racing before heading to Nevada.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe next major step is getting ready for the casting date, which is when we actually place the concrete formwork after we\u2019ve done all the design,\u201d Safely said. \u201cThis year we spent about three hours casting, which is really good. We\u2019ve seen it range all the way from three hours to almost 17 hours depending on how intricate your actual mix placement is.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The students will compete before judges against other universities from Utah, Idaho, Arizona and Nevada.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cUSU tries to participate every year since 1988. I think only two years have not had competitions, and those were 2020 and 2021,\u201d Safely said. \u201cWe look forward to actually being out there again and having a greater competitive edge.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Austin Ball, ASCE faculty adviser at USU, advises the approximately 60 members of the chapter. He said participating in competitions is a good opportunity for students for various reasons.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe first and most important is that it\u2019s hands-on,\u201d Ball said. \u201cWe take the materials that we talk so much about in classes, and we do something with it. And there\u2019s a lot of learning that comes from that \u2014 both from the frustration side, but also from watching it come to fruition side. Recognizing the differences between the theoretical and the practical.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Ball said the team develops soft skills like communication, working as a team and taking a project from a concept to construction.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cYou get a group that, you know, become friends and the camaraderie that results from that,\u201d Ball said.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">He said he does not consider soft skills \u201cside benefits\u201d because of how important they are.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cAnd then, of course, there\u2019s the credibility to the college,\u201d Ball said. \u201cWe show that USU has the technical prowess to compete at this level. So there really is a whole host of benefits from being a part of this competition.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">According to Ball, the goal is to send three teams from USU to the national competition this year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI think the travel is probably their favorite part,\u201d Ball said. \u201cI do think that competing and showing off their work is definitely, you know, a moment of pride for them.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Ball said 39 students are traveling to Reno to compete this year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI\u2019m just genuinely looking forward to their experience this year,\u201d Ball said. \u201cI think that they\u2019re going to do incredibly well, and I couldn\u2019t be prouder of my Aggies.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Utah State University\u2019s College of Engineering has been working to draft, mold, cast, create and sail a canoe made of&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":891956,"featured_media":22124069,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,20],"tags":[14883,1394,850,14884,761,14885],"class_list":["post-22124066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-all","category-features","tag-canoe","tag-college-of-engineering","tag-competition","tag-concrete-canoe","tag-engineering","tag-engineering-students"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.6 -
