You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch — Who did it best?

In 1966, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was released and children have been able to watch Dr. Seuss’ classic Christmas story on their television every winter since.

In 2000, a live action version of the film was made for both adults and kids to enjoy. The film starred Jim Carrey as the grouchy green Grinch.

And in 2018, yet another version called “The Grinch” was released with Benedict Cumberbatch lending his voice for the main role.

So which of the three films is best?

Each film has its pros and cons based on its cast and the time it was made.

The 1966 film is obviously a classic movie with classic songs that are recognizable and loved by most people. With a script following Dr. Seuss’ book almost word for word, the 26 minute long film tells a simple, heartwarming story.

However, a few complaints could be made to say the animation is only so-so and that the movie is too short to even be considered a movie.

The Jim Carrey version is considered a classic as well, but not by everyone. This film features all of the events of the original, but goes deeper. It dives into the Grinch’s sad and lonely past and answers the question of why he hates Christmas. It also splashes in some romance and a lot of comedy while still maintaining the jolly, heartwarming feeling of remembering what Christmas truly means.

While the 2000 version is hilarious and enjoyable, would it still be likeable without the contribution of Jim Carrey and his crazy voices and acting?

Many felt the 2018 film “The Grinch” was unasked for. The world was already blessed with two Grinch movies. Was a third one necessary?

The animation in the most recent movie was modern, impressive and gave the movie a cute, warm vibe. It also had a good soundtrack full of recognizable songs, but the film just wasn’t enough. It told the story of the Grinch without really adding anything new, so while it’s not a total waste of time to watch, it was probably not worth making.

The main trait in each film that affected the movie’s quality was the portrayal of the Grinch.

The Grinch in the 1966 film was purely fueled by annoyance toward the Whos in Whoville. All of their constant singing drove him to pretend to be Santa Claus and steal Christmas.

Jim Carrey’s Grinch had a backstory that explained his reason for hating Christmas and the Whos. He was extremely extra in his quest for revenge against all of the Whos that judged and bullied him, making him an iconic figure for anyone who’s ever felt annoyed by holidays or cheerful people.

The 2018 Grinch also had a backstory to defend his avoidance of Whos around Christmas time. However, he’s simpler than the other Grinches. He shops at the grocery store like the Whos, and he’s soft. He shows weakness whenever he sees a family together. He’s pretty mediocre.

So, the most iconic Grinch of the three movies is Jim Carrey’s. But the best Grinch movie? It’s a tie.

The 1966 movie will always be a classic, and the 2000 version is just too iconic.

Sadly, the 2018 one doesn’t make the cut. Sorry Benedict Cumberbatch!
