Cheap ways to beautify

Beauty is found from within…but that doesn’t stop people from trying to look good on the outside too. However, college students trying to pay for tuition, rent and groceries sometimes find it hard to buy the expensive products advertisers say they need to be beautiful. Luckily, many girls have found cheaper ways to keep themselves looking good.

Here are a few tips from USU students who know how to be cheap by being creative.

To get rid of zits, Mickie Mortensen, a sophomore in accounting, knows a good trick. One of her favorite ways to get rid of a big zit is to put toothpaste on it. She does it all the time and said it really works.

“It usually goes away in a day or so,” she said.

For her hair, Mortensen says sometimes she uses egg whites as mousse. All you have to do is beat the egg whites until they look like whipped cream. Not only does it work well for curly hair, she said, but it gives some people curl where they didn’t have it before.

“It works really well,” she said.

Sofi Parras, a sophomore in special education, knows some tricks for a variety of areas. First, she says there is no need for cold cream or expensive face cleaners; baby oil is very good for removing makeup.

“And it makes your wrinkles go away,” she added.

A helpful summertime hint: for those with sunburns, rubbing tomatoes on it makes the pain go away.

For people interested in lightening their hair, just put some lemon juice in it before going out in the sun.

Finally, people don’t need to buy expensive kits to whiten their teeth. “All you need to do is dip your toothbrush is baking soda,” Parras said.

Make-up can be very expensive, especially for those who like to coordinate their eyeshadow with their outfits. Jessica Feller, a sophomore majoring in sociology recommends just buying an inexpensive kit with a lot of colors in it and then mixing them.

“You can make your own custom colors,” she said.

Matching eyeshadow to outfits sometimes doesn’t help someone’s look if they’ve got puffy eyes, but Feller has a solution for that too. Put a cold spoon on your eyes and it the puffiness will go down. She suggested that people put the spoon in the fridge for a minute or two and then hold it on their eyes. It doesn’t take the puffiness completely away, but it works, she said.

Finally, though she hasn’t tried it herself, Feller said she learned how to make her own perfume. All a person has to do is boil a flower of his or her choice in water covered with cheesecloth. Wait until only a tiny amount of water is left in the bottom of the pot and put it in a bottle, and then there is homemade perfume.

A Few Other Tips:

Mortensen and Parras agreed that putting lotion in your hair when it is frizzy is a good technique as long as people only use a tiny bit.

“Otherwise it gets really greasy,” Mortensen said.

A lot of girls said they save money on shaving cream by using lotion or cheap conditioner to shave their legs instead.

The possibilities are endless, and the knowledge is priceless. By getting a little creative, it’s easy to be beautiful without going broke.
