OUR VIEW: Where the devil is your opinion?
You have opinions. We know it.
Walking around the halls, we hear you talking about things, taking stands on issues. But none of it appears in The Statesman.
Last year there were a lot of letters to the editor. This year our poor editor hangs her head because she doesn’t get to read a lot of letters haranguing the newspaper for being too liberal or too conservative.
Are you sick of the Persian Peacock drama of last year, or do they just not show enough cartoon skin to annoy people right now? Have you given up trying to get smokers’ rights or keep the TSC patio smoke-free? And does nobody have an opinion on Marshall Thompson’s walk across Utah for peace?
Believe it or not, we want to hear what you have to say and what issues you think are important. We want to know if you think USU is really lame or really good and why.
We’re not saying you should do our jobs; you shouldn’t. We try to find the news and activities on campus, but as full-time students and newspaper reporters, we miss things. So if there is something horrible going on and you are outraged by it, write in.
Across campus there are things happening. Most of these things people are apathetic about, but many of them you have an opinion on. We’ve heard complaints about the Quadside Cafe hours, icy sidewalks, expensive textbooks and how much they hate parking. We’ve also heard about people who like how available wireless internet is becoming, how much they like the LTD busses and Aggie Shuttles and how great the hockey team is.
The problem is you are just saying these things in the hall before your class or meeting your friend in the Sunburst Lounge. If you really hate something or really like something, use The Statesman to tell people about it. The newspaper is a vehicle for change. By letting more people know about how you feel, you will find others who agree with you. It’s the power of the people, baby.
So get out there. Form an opinion. Then tell us.
