LETTER: Quit legislating morality at USU

To the editor:

In the words of Randy Marsh, “I thought this was America.” The outright ban of smoking on the USU campus is ridiculous, although it’s come to be expected in Cache Valley. How many USU students drop dead as they pass through the union patio? The Web site Cancer.org reports there were 500 new cases of melanoma of the skin and 600 new cases of lung cancer in 2007. This illustrates the dangers of skin cancer are on par with lung cancer. If this really is about the safety of students, then the university should be covered by a giant tarp to protect ginger folks like myself from the sun. I didn’t choose to be ginger, but I deal with it, I don’t make everyone else live in the shade.

I hate smoking, but you just can’t trample other peoples’ rights. If health were the real concern here, outdoor barbecues at venues such as A-day would also be getting the boot. Quit legislating morality and give people a place to smoke. I’m sure ASUSU will steal my statistic and ban the so-called immoral sunbathing on the Quad for “safety” reasons as well.
