LETTER: Smoking ban is discriminatory

Stephen Lindsay

To the editor:

A complete ban of smoking on the USU campus is wrong. I am a non-smoker. I am also an endurance runner and a climber who cares a lot about having healthy lungs. In the 3 and a half years I have attended this school, I have never once been remotely bothered by secondhand smoke. I have yet to talk to anyone who has. The ASUSU senate argues that a ban is needed for “health concerns.”

All data presented in the previous articles on the matter are poorly researched, poorly interpreted and non-applicable at best. Any further restrictions on smoking is a direct infringement of the rights of those who choose to smoke. If folks want to light up outside, than I believe my rights are in no way affected. I find it disheartening and irritable that our student body leaders have even considered such a discriminatory policy. This legislation directly alienates many students and further widens the growing divisions here at USU.
