Africa Night shows positive side of Africa

Just under 100 USU students and faculty members gathered Friday night in the International Lounge at the TSC for Africa Night, an event put on by the African Students Association.

The event’s purpose was to “promote the positive side of African culture, the stuff you don’t see on the news,” said Bemate Bomboma, one of the event organizers.

The event included music from various countries as well as live drumming from the West African dance class drummers. There was also a slide show in which the hosts of the event were meant to introduce people to the parts of Africa they might not typically imagine, such as big cities.

Six attendees participated in a trivia contest and received CDs from African countries as prizes. Their questions involved capital cities, populations and geography of different countries.

Several panelists answered questions from the audience, including differences in culture and climate. Panelists emphasized that Africa is a continent and answers may differ according to one person’s native country.

AFSA students come from various countries including Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, as well as members native to the United States.

Africa Night also included a fashion show in which audience volunteers and AFSA members modeled clothing from African countries used on various occasions.

Students interested in participating in AFSA events or making a difference in Africa can meet with the other members Wednesdays at 9 p.m. at the “Boat House,” 699 N. 600 East.
