OUR VIEW: TSC table policy needs revision

Walking to and from class, students should be allowed the opportunity to pass through the TSC without being harassed by cell phone vendors or have fliers shoved unwanted into their hands. There are too many tables advertising events, clubs and products in the TSC. While the role of any student center on a college campus should allow for advertising of events that impact students, a student center should never be a place for potential customers to be held captive.

University administration and student leaders have already taken the right steps in solving this problem by removing potential student employers, such as pest control companies, and sending them to the USU Career Fair. Kathy Leslie was right on the money when she told the Statesman she thinks only university-related tables should be allowed in the TSC. We encourage TSC directors to revisit the policy and make the decision that is best for students.

In the meantime, we encourage those who staff the tables, regardless of university affiliation, to keep some common courtesy in mind when approaching students. Aggressive distribution of fliers, obnoxious advertising claims or even cat calls are never appreciated.
