Logan Police investigating Smith’s robbery
A robbery at the pharmacy in Smith’s Marketplace, 225 N. Main Street, brought the rising problem of prescription drug theft close to home Thursday.
Police are still investigating the crime, which is the first of its kind in Logan.
Around 12:30 p.m. a robber walked into the grocery store and approached the pharmacy counter. He asked the pharmacist for an undisclosed amount of prescription drugs.
After several threats, the pharmacist gave the robber the drugs and he left the building through the south door and headed north on foot, Capt. Dave Tarbet of the Logan Police Department said.
Police are looking for a man in his 50s with brown hair. He was wearing a red-fleece jacket at the time of the robbery.
“This is probably a local person,” Tarbet said. “We’ll probably locate them in a day or two.”
Based on the description from the pharmacists working at the time of the crime, police believe the man was high on drugs. They hope to trace him through his history of drug addiction.
“Presently, the detective and officers are working on all of the leads that we have and prior histories of drug users that we’re aware of to see if we can figure out who this guy is specifically,” Tarbet said.
This is the first time Logan Police have had to deal with prescription drug robbery in the area. The theft is unique because of the threatening manner the robber used.
Prescription drug abuse is a rising problem across the nation and Utah is currently one of 16 states that monitors prescription drug abuse. However, Thursday’s robbery was not monitored because the person’s name wasn’t already in the system.
Details on weapons, the types of drugs stolen and the amounts were not available. No one was injured from the incident.
