Column: ASUSU View; Students can now submit nominations

Do you know someone who has done amazing things at Utah State? Well, Robins Awards is a tradition that gives us the opportunity to recognize outstanding students, faculty and professional staff.

The Robins Awards started when Bill E. Robins the student body president in 1954, had a vision. The Taggart Student Center was one item he envisioned and its realization today is due, in part, to his pioneering efforts. Unfortunately, Bill and his wife Geraldine were in route to Denver, Colo., for a conference when their plane crashed. Both Bill and Geraldine were killed, leaving behind their 1-year-old son Nick.

The Sigma Nu fraternity, which Bill was a part of, decided to create a scholarship fund that would provide for Nick’s education when he was old enough to enroll into the university. Sadly, seven years later, Nick was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away shortly after.

In tribute to the Robins’ family, the money that had been collected was turned into a scholarship which was awarded to an outstanding student here at Utah State University.

Since then, ASUSU and the Sigma Nu fraternity have created a night to honor outstanding students, organizations, faculty and professional staff members of Utah State University who have made a lasting impact.

Throughout the years, a variety of different awards have been created. Now with 16 awards, and creating an additional award this year, we are asking students to keep this significant tradition alive.

Nominations for Robins Awards will be held Feb. 6 -17. Nomination forms will be available on the first floor of the TSC from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in TSC Room 326 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or online at http://a-station.usu.edu./robins1.cfm. A link on Webmail has also been provided. All nominees will be required to turn in a short biography, which will be coded and scored by a panel of judges. Finalists for all the awards will be announced in March.

The annual Robins Awards ceremony will be held April 22. Following the awards will be the “Blue Carpet Ball,” also known as Spring Formal. Be a part of Aggie tradition and nominate those who represent what USU is all about.
