Mid-summer sculpture activity for teens all set
Utah State University’s Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art offers a workshop for teenagers who want to learn to make sculpture. Pre-registration is now underway.
California sculptor Richard Johnston will be on hand to present workshops for teens and teachers July 12-15. In conjunction with the week-long project, an exhibition of Johnston’s work will be on display at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art through July 31.
Additionally, an artist’s presentation is July 13 at 7 p.m. in the Chase Fine Arts Center complex adjacent to the museum in room FAV 150. The lecture and exhibition are free and open to the public.
Students will explore the museum’s sculpture collection on the first day of the workshop with Education Coordinator Nadra Haffar-Peragallo. Then, with direction from Johnston, participants use various materials to create sculpture and modular units.
Teens ages 12-14 can sign up for the workshop’s morning session, 9 a.m. to noon, and teens ages 15-17 can enroll in the 1-4 p.m. session. Cost for either workshop is $40 per student.
Teachers can participate in the “Evening for Educators” workshop, July 15 from 3-6:30 p.m. The workshop includes a slide lecture of Johnston’s work, sample materials and refreshments.
Evening for Educators is a state-wide program sponsored by the Statewide Art Partnership that provides educational opportunities for teachers of any discipline and state- approved, accredited teacher training. The workshop is designed to provide hands-on experience with managing sculpture projects in the classroom and shows how art projects can meet the core curriculum of fifth grade through high school for science, math and art. A $5 suggested donation is requested to offset the cost of materials.
Pre-registration is required for all workshops. For more information or to register, call the museum at (435) 797-1414 or (435) 797-0165.
