LETTER: Don’t pay for breaking law

I just wanted to say I am getting tired of hearing the university gripe about money. (Teachers griping about low wages is acceptable, though.) Sure, by bringing in more money we will have a better education. However, when we get all caught up in getting more money we lose our focus on the university’s goal. That goal is for a better education. The whole focus of this campus lately has been to bring in more money.

If the university can afford to pay Mr. Pugmire a 60-day administrative leave for a DUI, the university has plenty of money to throw around. That’s great! Let’s raise tuition by 6 percent to pay for DUIs. Has this university considered that its employee driving university property may have killed somebody because of his careless actions? Not to mention the damage occurred to the university reputation and property because of his unwillingness to comply with national laws.

Let’s cut back on unneeded expenses and use the university’s money more wisely. I know it is in your words “complicated.” Let’s make it uncomplicated and not pay for Mr. Pugmire’s jail time and cut back on other unnecessary expenses. Do whatever is necessary to solve this problem and start focusing on the student body with sober professors and better facilities.
