OUR VIEW: Time to protest freezin’ season
As Shakespeare said, “now is the winter of our discontent.” Cache Valley has endured a longer-than-normal cold season, with record highs in snowfall and, of course, pollution levels. The endless inversion has struck fear, or at least, uncertainty, into every heart. People have even been warned to stay inside, which is funny, because where does our indoor air come from?
Anyway, it’s safe to say that all of us are ready for a weather change. We’re tired of slipping on the ice, freezing our pants off, and wearing extra layers of clothing. With Spring Break only a week away, we look forward to better, happier, sunnier times.
Although one shouldn’t complain about things one cannot change, the temptation to gripe about weather is too great.
With all due respect, we are thankful for the moisture. Snow has melted into a great farm and garden resource (water), and now it’s been raining for almost two days. Hooray, we have water! The second-dryest (allegedly) state in the country is getting drenched, and now we’re ready for spring.
We’re hoping that Spring Break will signify the beginning of a kinder, gentler season. The freezin’ season has gone on long enough. We demand a change now, and if necessary, government intervention to warm up the weather.
Never again will we bad-mouth global warming. In fact, we fully support it, mainly because we are exhausted from shivering.
Of course, in nine months, when we will have been burned by the sun and in desperate need of H2O, we will begin a new series of complaints. This attitude is reminiscent of a poem by Gabe Baluyut:
As a rule, man is a fool,
When it is hot, he wants it not,
When it is cold, he wants it hot
Always wanting what is not.
