LETTER: Everyone needs to improve

Editor,

One of the big issues of this election has been gay marriages. Few people debate the quality of Utah’s water and the $150,000,000 debt that comes along, nor the fact that a commission decides how and where this large sum of money is spent without votes from the Legislature. Both sides have made their points but gay marriages are not the big issue here. We are deciding if our society recognizes right and wrong.

If we decide there are limits to what is good and decent this brings another question, who determines these limits? God, nature, politicians or does everyone choose for themselves? If God decides we are all wrong to some degree and should change. If nature decides, homosexuality is acceptable, however, we must also accept cruelty, apathy and neglect. We have all seen animals do horrible things to each other. I think we have the ability to control our actions above mere instinct. That is what separates us from the animal kingdom. If everyone decides what is right and wrong for yourself and just how we all are is OK no matter what (a great fallacy of our generation), then in fact we have chosen that there is no right or wrong after all. I won’t mention why politicians shouldn’t decide.

We must decide what we believe. I feel that it would be much better for our country/state to believe in God and respect his laws. I am not talking about state-sponsored religion, but merely a healthy respect for God and his basic commandments in congress, courts, workplaces, homes, and streets would be refreshing for everyone. In the past decades we have tried to replace God by things like science and redefining rights like “free speech” and “pursuit of happiness.” Our society is facing more horrible crimes and social problems than ever. It is time we quit debating what is worse. I don’t care if bad heterosexual parents or homosexual parents do more damage to children. We need to decide what is ideal and conform. Yes, that means improvements for everyone.
