Most significant record, Carroll or Stew?
This is tough. Both records are such great accomplishments, and choosing one as more significant than another is tricky, if not impossible. Utah State has always had very good coaching. Look back over the years and most Utah State coaches have had success. A big-time scorer only happens every so often. It took Carroll starting pretty much every game of his entire career to put himself in a position to break the record his senior season. A shooter and scorer like Carroll is very rare, and I think we will see another great coach at Utah State before we see another consistent four-year scorer like Carroll.
Super Bowl Pick
I have thought since the beginning of the playoffs that the Patriots would be in the Super Bowl. I picked the Giants to lose in round one. New York is on fire, but they are about to run full on to an extinguisher when they meet the Patriots in the Super Bowl. I know the Giants have won three road playoff games in a row, and that is impressive, but nothing the Giants have done can compare to the stage they will be on when they play in the Super Bowl. On the other hand, the Patriots have guys who have not only played in but won three Super Bowls. This experience will be too much for the Giants to overcome
Most Disappointing team in the NBA?
I have to say the Chicago Bulls on this one. Last year with a very young, talented team, they made the playoffs for the third straight year and swept the defending NBA champions and looked to be heading upward to bigger and better things. Instead, as of this writing, they have a 16-24 record and an interim head coach after the firing of coach Scott Skiles. To make things worse, lately in the news we have been hearing about player disputes and trade rumors. Last I checked, these weren’t techniques used to turn around a struggling season. Look for the Bulls to be passed up in the standings by the Bucks, and they can take their rightful place as cellar dwellers.
Should Favre come back?
This ancient fossil that we call Brett Favre just completed his 17th season and is contemplating coming back for season 18. If he were smart, he would hang up his cleats now before he has to use a walker or electronic wheelchair to maneuver in and out of the pocket and to avoid defenders. Really though, can he do any better? He led a young Packer team to a 13-3 record and the NFC Championship game. Brett, you’ve had a good, long career and accomplished great things. No one will remember that your last throw was a game-changing interception. Seventeen years is long enough. Enjoy your millions of dollars and retire.
Biggest NBA surprise?
Look at it this way: The team that finished with the worst record in the NBA last year got this year’s first pick in the NBA draft, going on with his luck that No. 1 pick got hurt for the entire season. Now, would you believe me if I told you that team has a 24-15 record and has won 20 games out of its last 24. Well that is exactly the position the Portland Trail Blazers are in, finding themselves sitting in first place in the northwest division. I don’t know if they can continue playing like they have been, but right now they are hitting on all cylinders.
Rant How about the performance of former Aggie football player Kevin Robinson in the East-West shrine game. He caught four balls and a touchdown to go along with a punt return for a touchdown. I know a big deal is made about the combine and players’ times in the 40-yard dash. But if you ask me, I say a performance like this should be looked at closely by a pro scout. Robinson just goes out there and plays hard and gets results. On all of the latest draft boards, his stock is rising, and since teams are always looking for threats in the return game, look for K-Rob to have a chance to play on Sundays along with these former Aggies: pro-bowl tight end Chris Cooley, wide receiver Kevin Curtis and cornerback Jarrett Bush. Go Aggies.
