Our View: Lawmakers sometimes can admit mistakes

First you can’t park on the street at night, then you can – as long as it’s not snowing or 48 hours after, and then you can again park on the street, but for one hour less a day. Someone needs to make up their minds.

Parking is already a nightmare for students, and changing this ordinance didn’t make it any easier. The new ordinance was hard to understand – who had the power to decide what exactly ‘snowing’ meant and when it officially ended to begin the 48 hour after part of the law?

Not being able to park on the street meant those students who had enjoyed the free parking and taking the shuttle to campus were going to have to fork out more money to buy a parking pass in order to avoid getting a ticket. This upset students and many just waited until they got a ticket, but that time didn’t come.

The enforcing of the new ordinance never fully happened due to the confusion, not only to the residents of Logan, but also for the parking officials. Thankfully people let the Logan City Council know changing the ordinance in the middle of the season was not a good idea, and the new policy was just too confusing. We won’t go into detail on how much information was actually given to residents about the exact changes, because the lawmakers themselves didn’t fully know. The council again addressed the issue at this week’s city council meeting and decided, ‘hey we were wrong, the old way really was the best, as long as we allow the snow plow a little more time to clean the streets, due to the growth Logan has seen over the past years.’

We can still stay out visiting our friends late, no more having to make sure it isn’t snowing before you park on the road. And as long as your car is off the street by 1 a.m., tickets aren’t a worry, unless for some outrageous reason you want to be up and parking somewhere before 6 a.m. Thankfully there are times when politicians can see that in their haste to fix a problem they have only created a bigger one. This is one of those times, and while where to park will always remain an issue for students, at least the times are set and the confusion has settled.
