Assault Weapons

Editor,

When I first heard that congress was letting the assault weapons ban expire I thought it was joke. The very fact that was an expiration date also puzzled me. I can see no real benefits in letting people legally buy assault weapons.

I know people need to feel secure in these troubled times but I think a security system or even hand gun could do the trick. I have never been in or heard of a situation where one would need to shoot a person with fifty rounds of ammunition in less than two seconds. Do people think our military is so inept that we will some day have a situation like that in the movie Red Dawn?

Also the Idea that someone with a gun could have prevented the attacks of September 11th is illogical. If a passenger could have brought a gun on one of the planes, what would stop the terrorist from bring a gun to counter the passenger?

What I’m really afraid of is gun nut barging into my home with an A.K. 47. Just think of the name assault, meaning a violent physical ATTACK, weapon. Its not defensive weapon or safeguard weapon. I don’t think people who want and are willing to pay money for these kinds of weapons are going to just lock them up in gun cabinet for just in case. Our founding fathers did give us the right to bear arms but I don’t think they meant for it to go this far.
