LETTER: Stop playing childish games
Editor:
Here we go again. Every semester some campus organization puts up a sign and tells everyone that if they agree with some idea that this group is promoting, then the students should wear pants/shirts/jeans on a certain day. Having been a student at USU for three-plus years now, I am getting pretty good at ignoring these childish games, often played out in the TSC, by students who apparently don’t have enough homework to do.
However, today the joke went a little further. Walking through the TSC early Friday afternoon I saw a sign hanging in the hall that said ” Wear pants on Monday if you think that President Bush is misleading the country” ( or something to that effect). Later that evening, I returned and the sign had been added to: “Whoever it was that took our sign down, we know who you are …we believe in free speech.
For the love of Big Blue! Shame on the students whose inane idea it was to put the sign up. How is it you are claiming to protect the free speech of the 95 percent of students who will be unknowingly wearing pants on Monday? That is as irrational as me claiming that by living in this country, by default, you agree with its leaders, or you would have long ago moved to France! I am also disappointed with the person who wasted the time tearing down the poster. As foolish as it is, it still has the right to be there.
Please, all of you politically minded students, who want their voices to be heard, and are wasting your time playing silly games in the TSC – There are so many people on campus who are not registered to vote, uneducated on the issues, and don’t even know it’s an election year. If you really want to make a difference find those people, educate them, debate each other, and set up worthwhile activities meant to promote awareness of political issues and stop degrading yourselves by playing childish games in the TSC.
