Is Bob Knight the best college coach ever?
What’s the measure of a coach? Wins and losses? The players produced? The amount of lives he/she has touched? For me it’s the latter. And no one coach has touched more lives than The General, Bob Knight. To be clear, by touch, I mean choked, hit, kicked, thrown chairs at. Also, touched emotionally-berated for being a pansy, for missing a free throw or looking at Bob wrong. Knight also gets the nod because of his propensity for volatile, violent and profane behavior. The man has serious chair-throwing skills, too. And, he looks damn fine in a red sweater. Oh, yeah. He’s got 900 wins. Duh.
Thoughts on Mark Fox
Mark Fox is no Bobby Knight. He tries hard, throwing his jacket like Knight threw chairs-even assaulted an official last year in the Spectrum. But Saturday’s game showed me Fox isn’t Knight. When Fox grabbed Aggie point guard Kris Clark on the sideline and Clark spun around, Fox grabbed Clark’s head with both hands. I thought, “Jesus, he’s going after a player this time.” Upon closer inspection, Fox was gently cradling Clark’s head, like you would a baby … or a potential mate. For a split second, I was positive Fox was going to shove his tongue in Clark’s mouth. Clearly not a Bob Knight move. The General would have delivered a debilitating head butt, not a make-up smooch.
What does the loss in the Super Bowl do to the Pats’ legacy?
Where to start? How about this: MUHA HA HA HA HA HA HA. Who cares? Evil lost and good won the day. The rest of NFL history won’t have to live under the tyrannical reign of Bill Belichick. With the loss to the Giants, the Patriots pissed away a chance at evil immortality. Good. We won’t have to hear about the 19-0, ’08 Pats getting together and drinking champagne when a deserving team has its run at an undefeated season thwarted by a cowardice, cheating Belichick disciple. The real tarnish may come when former Pats video department employee Matt Walsh talks to the NFL about some videotaping he says the Patriots did of the Rams’ walk through before the Super Bowl in 2002. Stay tuned.
Biggest NBA All-Star snub?
Everyone is going to say D-Will. I think Sam is saying D-Will, which means I can’t say D-Will. Well, I’ll have to make something up. Usually, I would pick some random guy, like Sacramento forward Mikki Moore, and tell you he deserves it for his beard/dreadlock combo. Mikki Moore looks stupid, so that doesn’t work. So, being serious-for once, and probably only once-I would say Marcus Camby is the biggest snub. Sure he only averages 9.3 points per game, but he’s pulling down 14.3 rebounds per and swatting almost four balls a game. I say bring some defense to the usual 145-138 dunkfest.
Was Super Bowl 42 the biggest upset ever?
Sunday’s game may have been the most important game in NFL history, but it wasn’t the biggest Super Bowl upset ever. Super Bowl III, where Broadway Joe Namath guaranteed his team would win and they actually did-beating the heavily favored Baltimore Colts 17-6 – from what I understand, was a big deal. And I’ve got to go with Namath, he’s a man after my own heart. Not really the whole pantyhose-commercial thing. But a man willing to go on camera a little sauced and hit on a sideline reporter – “I want to kiss you. I couldn’t care less about the team struggling.”-is man I can respect. Suzy Kolber isn’t a bad looking chick, either.
Rant
I hope everyone went out and voted. It’s our duty as good Americans to vote and get one of those “I Voted” stickers. Politics isn’t the point here, I’ll get to it in a second, but first, a story: I waded through Munchkinland, ignoring the threat of about 1,000 potential ankle-biting fiends to cast my ballot at Adams Elementary. I wish I had the same say in the Super Bowl MVP voting as I did in Tuesday’s primary. There was a gross injustice done Sunday night. Tom Petty’s beard should have been the MVP. Sure, Eli Manning engineered a Giant upset-get the pun? – and made one of the best plays in Super Bowl history, but does it really stack up to the aging rocker’s burly blond beard? I think not.
