Caught on Campus: Vernal native loves fish and monkeys

Devin Felix

Andrea Severson was caught on a recent afternoon in the Juniper Lounge in the TSC. Quick with a laugh, and possessed of an uncommon affection for fish and monkeys, she gladly shared a few moments with me to enable me to give you a glimpse into her life and mind.

Hometown: Vernal, Utah

Major: fisheries and aquatic sciences and anthropology

Year: Junior

US: Why did you choose your majors?

Andrea: My dad is fisheries biologist, so I’ve been around fish since I was just a little girl. I decided that I really liked fish and I wanted to work with them when I grew up. And then anthropology is something that kind of caught me off guard last year when I took biological anthropology and I fell in love with primates and that kind of stuff.

US: What do you like about fish?

Andrea: I don’t know, there’s so much variety, I guess. You can go from saltwater fish to freshwater fish and there’s so many things that fish can do. If you dig in, you find all kinds of crazy stuff like electric eels.

US: Do you like to eat fish?

Andrea: I do.

US: What’s your favorite kind of fish to eat?

Andrea: I like bluegill a lot.

US: So, why did you choose to come to Utah State?

Andrea: The fisheries program. It’s the only place in Utah you can study fisheries.

US: What do you like most about Utah State?

Andrea: I really like the professors in the programs I’m in. They’re really good at getting you involved. I really like the programs.

US: If you had an unlimited supply of monkeys, what would you do with it?

Andrea: That’s a good one. Maybe I’d put them to work and see what I could teach them. I’d see what their learning capacity was. I don’t know, I’d do something fun with them. I’d play with them but still see what they could learn. I’ve never been able to just sit and play with a monkey, so I’d see how they react to me.

US: Did you dress up for Halloween?

Andrea: No.

US: Why not?

Andrea: ‘Cause I’m boring.

US: If you had dressed up, what would you have dressed up as?

Andrea: I’ll say a naughty nurse.

US: Why a naughty nurse?

Andrea: Because it’s totally not me.

US: Good save. If you could take any superhero’s powers as your own, what powers would you take?

Andrea: Maybe being invisible.

US: What would you do if you were invisible?

Andrea: Watch people. Oh, no that was probably a bad answer.

Andrea Severson, a junior dual majoring in fisheries and aquatic science along with anthropology, said if she had her choice of superpowers she would choose to be invisable and use her powers to observe people.
