Club sponsors service day

Cache Valley residents will gather at Willow Park Saturday to participate in “A Day of Sharing,” which consists of several service projects, a volunteer fair, food and entertainment.

This city-wide day of community service is an annual event in Seattle. A former Logan resident sent word of the activity to her parents, who live in Cache Valley. They directed the information to the Interfaith Service Club at Utah State University after reading about the group in the paper, according to a press release from the club.

The service group tries to coordinate one service project per month, said the club’s coordinator Becky Nudd, a senior majoring in Liberal Arts. Nudd, the founder of “A Day of Sharing,” decided the week of A-Day would be the perfect time to bring the event to Cache Valley. After a week full of activities, students would be able to end the celebration by serving those in the community and other parts of the world.

“Let’s bring the service back to A-Day,” Nudd said.

The day begins at 9 a.m. with a 5K run benefiting Operation Smile. The race begins at Willow Park and costs $8 before the event and $10 at the door. To register, visit the event’s Web site at http://cc.usu.edu/~ksw.

At 10 a.m., Logan Mayor Doug Thompson will host the kick-off ceremony at the park. After the ceremony, people will be directed to different projects which include cleaning up highways, helping the Fire Department paint hydrants and curbs, painting and building shelves at Somebody’s Attic and making crafts for the elderly at Sunshine Terrace.

Stationed at the park, a community fair, featuring service projects for children and booths with information about volunteering in Cache Valley, will give residents many opportunities to help the community. There will also be live entertainment and businesses offering discounts and samples.

A USU campus clean-up is also included in the day’s activities. Students interested in serving should meet in front of the Junction at 10 a.m. When the campus is clean, Creamies and Kool-Aid will be served. Prizes will also be awarded.

Nudd said she encourages USU students to participate in the day’s events because they are “a great effort of several different groups, organizations, local businesses and community members.” The activities will allow students to connect with Cache Valley and serve people in their neighborhoods.

“We are building bridges in the community,” she said.

Those who would like to serve in the community should meet at Willow Park, 419 W. 700 South, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., where they will be directed to a project in need of assistance.
