Huot, Ehlers help golfers to eighth place finish in Boise

Two Aggie golfers finished strong on the final day of the Boise State Bronco Roundup to ensure the Utah State golf team an eighth place finish.

Cody Huot and Jared Humphries shot a final round even par 71.

Huot shot his best three rounds of the year this week, recording a 72 in both rounds on Monday. He finished tied for 22nd overall, the best finish of any Aggie.

“We never took advantage of the breaks the course gave us,” said coach Dean Johansen.

He said it was a short course, the greens were immaculate and there was very little wind, but the Aggies couldn’t get the low scores needed to compete with the rest of the field.

Humphries improved in each of his three rounds shooting 75-72-71 to tie for 31st.

Only three of the Aggies’ 24 rounds were under par.

The main problem for Utah State was putting and chipping, Johansen said.

The one bright spot for the Aggies was freshman Brendon Ehlers. Ehlers shot 76-68-74 to tie for 31st in his collegiate debut.

His 68 on Monday tied him for the best round of any Aggie with Brett Black whose 68 also came in the second round.

Preston Otte recorded the only other under-par round for the Aggies when he shot a 69 in the opening round Monday.

After Monday’s rounds the Aggies were in eighth place trailing Oral Roberts by 10 strokes. Huot, Black, and Ehlers were all tied for 24th after the first two rounds and the Aggies had five golfers in the top 40.

Black shot a final round 77 to finish tied for 39th. Otte also finished 39th with his final round score of 76.

Jake Blair shot a final round 73 to move up to 57th overall. Blair improved each round shooting 81-75-73 for the tournament.

Johansen said the tournament, which took place at the Boise Ranch Golf Course, was probably the easiest course the Aggies will play this year.

As a team, the Aggies finished eighth, trailing Utah Valley State College by three strokes. Washington State won the tournament and Boise State finished second with Gonzaga ending the tournament at third.

The next meet for the Aggies will be against the Boise tournament’s fourth place finisher, Southern Utah. The match will be Oct. 21.
