LETTER: Library is one of USU’s largest recyclers

Editor,

In response to the letter by the whistle-blowing library recycler, the writer sounds as if they had witnessed a murder behind the library! Currently there are no recycling laws in Logan. Recycling is completely voluntary and the writer will be happy to know that the Merrill-Cazier Library is one of the largest contributors to USU recycling.

As for the items they saw being thrown away, they are not “bound journals” as was suspected, rather old indexes and abstracts that the library no longer needs and that can be found electronically on the USU library website. These items cannot be recycled without first removing the binding; a job which is not easy and for which no student employee receives enough money to do on top of their regular duties. I also work at the library and if it really bothers the writer immensely that these items are being thrown away, it can be arranged that every item will first be brought to their desk, with that great view of the dumpster, and they can remove the bindings!

The writer has obviously had enough time on their hands to inspect the trash being dropped in the dumpster daily. They shouldn’t have a problem finding time to remove the bindings as well. Also, the writer may want to use their time better by not writing ridiculous letters to the editor and go volunteer at the USU recycling center! They would love to have you! www.usu.edu/recycle/index.htm. Go Aggies!
