Letter to the Editor: Those crying tolerance may not be practicing it

Dear Editor,

I am sad to see that an advertisement, that is considered by some pornographic, has become another tool for mocking those with values belonging to a certain religious faith. Had this controversy occurred in another religious culture, would objections have been expressed with such vehemence and disrespect?

It is not just the dominant religion here in Utah that rejects unnecessary filth, but many people with “modest” standards are offended by such a display of lewdness. It concerns more than simply moral standards; it is an issue that offends me as a woman, as well. I don’t mind them selling lingerie, but to portray women in a sexually degrading way is offensive. It is true that the Statesmen shows pictures of gymnasts and other athletes that show “skin,” but these photographs are a far cry from the suggestive insinuations created by the pose in the ad and the general lack of respect for women that it implies. The citizens in this valley talk about tolerance for different standards, but are the defenses for the ad, such as those printed on this editorial page, really expressing any tolerance for the majority’s view?
