OUR VIEW: Food bank will need helping hands

With the holiday season coming, many are trying to figure out what the best way is to help those less fortunate. Some leave a Thanksgiving dinner at the doorstep of a home of a family that may not have enough money to buy its own turkey; some may pick a family to act as Santa for. One way – that actually may help more than just one family – is to support the local food bank.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that the United States Department of Agriculture said Utah is in the worst position in the country when it comes to food security – nutritional food available in individual households. Apparently, the average rate in the nation for food insecurity is 10.8 percent. Utah’s average is 15.2 percent. There’s something wrong with that.

Every college student has a can of food in their cupboards that they know they’re not going to eat by the end of the year. Most have more than just one can. How about putting that food to good use so those who are less well off can enjoy Thanksgiving, Christmas and the other 363 days of the year? Maybe they even need it to live.

If you don’t have extra food, you probably have an extra hour of your time – whether it be an hour a week or an hour a month – that could be donated to help the food bank. Whatever resources you have, give the Cache Valley Food Pantry a call to see how you can help. The number is 753-7140.
