OUR VIEW: Just ask normally to Homecoming
Homecoming Week is a great opportunity to socialize, have fun and generally take a few seconds away from your school work. The organizers of the events work their hardest to provide Utah State University’s student body with enjoyable activities throughout the entire week.
The end of the week – topped off by the dance Friday night and the game Saturday – brings back many alumni, probably increases donations to the university and is an all-together fun weekend.
The problem, we see, is not the activities, but the way they’re hyped up and brought about by students. If the freshman at USU wanted to go back to high school, Homecoming Week would be that time. One would think that any adult behavior and thinking processes we are supposed to be learning at college had gone out the window.
Our specific gripe: The way in which students are asking others to the dance. Only in high school was it acceptable for the name of the potential date to be wrapped up in a fresh – whole – chicken from Albertsons. Only in high school was it acceptable to Saran Wrap a person’s car with the date’s name cut into puzzle pieces and spread throughout hundreds of Styrofoam pieces inside. And, finally, only in high school was it acceptable to answer in the form of a scavenger hunt – that takes three or four precious hours to complete.
Come on, people. Grow up a little. If you want your fun, giddy, “Oh my gosh, he/she has a crush on me” moments, go help a younger sibling ask to a Halloween dance in a week or two. The rest of us would like to see a little maturity at the university.
