OUR VIEW: More than one reason to applaud Albrecht

Stan Albrecht is now, officially, the man. Named Tuesday as the 15th president of Utah State University, Albrecht’s appointment has resulted in a very supportive response across campus – for more than one reason.

With the state Legislature now officially in session, departments and programs are holding their breath for funding. Several major construction projects on campus are also in desperate need of continued support. Hall’s departure at such a politically crucial time made more than a few on campus nervous, but Albrecht’s experience in the past administration means he has the political know-how to keep the momentum going.

The Board of Regents should be applauded for their appointment of Albrecht. Not only is Albrecht clearly the best choice, but the decision to bypass a national search will save USU months in lost time and huge amounts of expense.

The process in which feedback was received by the board should also be commended. Several committees were formed to listen to, and eventually concur, with several groups across campus comprised of students, faculty and staff.

Finally, we appreciate the respect shown by the Board of Regents to USU students, faculty and alumni by choosing to make the decision here on campus where others could be present, as opposed to a closed office in Salt Lake City. If only students had had more warning concerning the announcement.

Congratulations to Albrecht. After Tuesday it is clear he has those on all sides in support of him.
