Soccer team ties on road

By Scott McAllisterStaff Writer After being down 3-0 for most of the game, the men’s club soccer team battled back in the closing minutes to earn a draw. It was the Aggies’ first road game of the season, going up against BYU-Idaho on Monday in Rexburg. All three Utah State goals came from different goal scorers – each of whom tallied their first goal of the season. The Aggies were missing two key defenders due to academic commitments and had a hard time keeping the Dragons out of the net in the first half. The home team scored twice on long-range shots from outside the penalty area, then added one more before they were done. “We just have those mental lapses where we give up goals,” Aggies’ head coach Vince Lamara said. “Then we have to dig ourselves out.” USU kept BYU-I in its own end of the field during most of the second half. The Ags only allowed the Dragons a single shot during the last 45 minutes. The Aggies got on the scoreboard when Colby Jones buried a penalty kick with 20 minutes remaining in the contest. Later Herschel Hugie got his head on the end of a cross from Clint Sadtterthwaite, making the score 3-2. “[It was] a beautiful head ball up into the corner – a gorgeous goal,” Lamara said. The comeback was complete when Morgan Taylor was clobbered in the penalty area by the Dragon goalkeeper. Stepping up to the penalty spot was Sadtterthwaite, who found the back of the net. Up next for the men’s soccer team are a couple of in-state teams they have never played before in club soccer. They will take on Snow College Friday evening at 6 p.m. and the University of Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Aggies will close out their home schedule with a game against Colorado State University – a team that has reached the NIRSA National Championship tournament for the last three years. The Colorado State game will be played on Sunday at 11 a.m. All home games are played at Bell Tower Field. -stm@cc.usu.edu
